Is there Uber in Namibia?

Quick answer

No — Uber does not operate anywhere in Namibia, and neither does Bolt. Namibia is not listed among Uber's cities, and opening the Uber app in Windhoek will not find you a ride. What Namibia has instead is its own e-hailing scene: NamCab, Yango, LEFA and inDrive all book rides from your phone the same way Uber does.

Why isn't Uber in Namibia?

Uber's entry into Windhoek has been rumoured for years — local media reported the company knocking on Windhoek's door as far back as the mid-2010s — but it never launched. Namibia is a small market by Uber's standards, most rides here are paid in cash, and by the time the market matured, local and regional platforms had already filled the gap. The result: the e-hailing experience exists, just under different names.

What to use instead of Uber

AppBest forHow it works
NamCabEveryday rides in Windhoek with a fare you can trustNamibian-built. Upfront fare estimate in NAD, capped so the final fare cannot run far beyond it. Verified drivers, live trip tracking, cash payment.
YangoRides in Windhoek and some coastal townsInternational app; fare calculated and shown at booking.
LEFAScheduled trips, airport transfers and toursNamibian company operating since 2018, with set per-route pricing.
inDriveNegotiating your own priceYou propose a fare; drivers accept or counter.

All of these work the way you expect from Uber: request in the app, see the driver and vehicle details, track the trip on a map. The main difference is payment — in Namibia, cash is standard, and NamCab is built around it. For a full comparison of the apps, see our guide to e-hailing in Namibia.

Getting from the airport without Uber

Hosea Kutako International Airport is about 45 km from Windhoek, so this is the first trip most visitors need. Shared shuttles run from about N$250 a seat and private transfers cost roughly N$350–800; the drive takes 40–50 minutes. Options, prices and booking advice are in our airport transfer guide.

Tips for visitors used to Uber

  • Carry cash in Namibian dollars — most rides are cash rides, and South African rand is accepted 1:1 almost everywhere.
  • Get a local SIM or eSIM on arrival; you need data to book.
  • Check the fare before you confirm. On NamCab the estimate you accept is also a cap on the final fare.
  • Avoid hailing unmarked cars on the street at night — our taxi safety guide explains what to look for.
